This week Russ and Clint talk with Paul Lowry about dental membership plans.  Paul created The Dental Menu to help a practice create dental membership plans with common sense bookkeeping techniques that offer an alternative to adjusting production/collections, while also adding ways to build value with your patients. While Russ will admit he was skeptical of Paul initially as we've heard a lot of dental membership companies with similar services, Russ was pretty impressed by the end of the interview and thought that Paul had some great points especially with the ideas from a business perspective. Give it a listen.

Russell Schafer and Clinton Timmerman find out just how soon-to-be Doctor Lisa Nelson makes her mark in the dental field and Doctor Kelsi Lewis discusses her scratch practice in Austin, Texas and how Texas is surprisingly behind the times in not letting hygienists anesthetize patients. Clinton Timmerman and Russell Schafer chat with Steven Dold of Wichita, Kansas, at Voices of Dentistry 2023 and ask him all the hard hitting questions we've all wanted answers to, such as giving Septo for blocks, if CR is a myth and if Han really fired first (he did).

Feb 5, 2023

In this episode, Russ and Clint interview Dr. Natalie Ballas.  Natalie is a dentist in Portland, OR who is crushing it.  We discuss her journey from West Virginia to Cleveland back to WV for dental school to Oregon to buy a dental practice.  We discuss managing patients as a more or less FFS office in a strong PPO market but also the importance of just doing what you love and living where you want to live.  While our discussion went all over the place, we think that it is still a cool story.  Give it a listen!

Jan 23, 2023

This week Clint and Russ do a small prequel to Voices of Dentistry 2023 and interview Matthew Yu and Brian Schweers.  We talk about each of their practices and how they incorporate digital dentistry into their offices.  We finish up talking about work life balance.

Jan 16, 2023

Due to some setbacks our intended episode did not work out, but we tried to salvage what we could of our interview with the Patient Whisperer himself, Paul Homoly, at Voices of Dentistry 2022.

Check out all of Paul Homoly's materials and come also say hi to Russell Schafer and Clinton Timmerman at Voices of Dentistry 2023 in Scottsdale.

Jan 2, 2023

This week Clint and Russ talk with Dr. John Ha out of Honolulu, HI.  You might know John from his guest appearance on Hawaii Five-O or from his posts on Facebook.  John runs a practice focused on implants and full mouth rehabs in an area with a dentist to population ratio of around less than 1:150.  You read that right, not 1:1500 which is around the average but 1:150.  We talk about extensively about marketing as well as discuss John's niche.

Dec 25, 2022

This week Russ is in Miami while Clint braves the cold in Washington and they talk with Dr. Joshua Austin.  Josh lectures on mental health both for dentists and for patients in his presentation Chamfered Psyche.  Everyone shares a bit of their mental health journey as well as talking about the importance of mental health care in day to day lives.  If you want to learn more about when and where Josh is speaking next, go to his website Austin Dental Seminars to learn more.

This week, Russell interviews Jessica Knott, Damien Bonner, and Matt Newman.  Jessica is part of Ackuretta and both Damien and Matt are from Cad-Ray.  We discuss how new 3D printed materials will be recognized under the ADA as ceramic crowns and how to incorporate them into your practice.  Coupled with Cad-Ray's new software Clinux, the goal of Ackuretta and Cad-Ray is to be able to design and fabricate a crown in a comparable time as a milled crown to work well in a dentist's office.
We also discuss how meeting come back and how great IDS in Germany is.

Nov 27, 2022

This week Russell gives his final interview from Smile Con 2022.  He was fortunate to have Ayush Bagla CEO of Ackuretta and Ryan Axelson CRO of Ackuretta on to discuss a lot of the non clinical aspects of 3D printing such as R&D of new resins and printers as well as which directions 3d printing is going in.  Good interview especially if you want to see non-dentists talking about dentistry.

Nov 20, 2022

So Clint is on the road and Russell has been busy so we created an episode last minute.  Russ debates whether or not to replace his desktop scanner or upgrade whereas Clint talks about his trip to Pueblo, CO to pick up his old crap and either move or remove it.  We have an in depth conversation on how should one equip a dental office as well as the importance of seat belts.  Russ discusses his plans to put his dog into witness protection if needed and Clint explains what Kelly isn't excited about him bringing home.

Nov 13, 2022

This week Russell releases an interview hot off the press.  He has not editted this one at all and literally just finished this one with his new friend Brian Schweers.  Brian was kind enough to take Russ's course this weekend on how to do dentures and 3d printing.
Brian is an RDH turned DDS.  He talks about how he learned to give anesthesia because Texas board doesn't think Hyg can give injections combine with his experience of working in God's country of West Texas to the naugty dirty east of Dallas.  All that being said, we shared good bourbon and just discussed dentistry in general.  Give it a listen.

Nov 10, 2022

Another midweek episode with Russ and Clint just shooting the bull.  Clint is in Spokane, WA working for the man while Russell does the last minute prep for his course discovering how messy his dental office is.  Spoiler alert, his office is very messy.  We discuss what are the most important parts of a CE course and of course we both come to the logical conclusion that asking the question "Do you like music?" to all CE participants followed by playing a song is the most necessary part of any CE course.

Nov 5, 2022

This week Clint and Russ interview Dr. Brian Stoute.  Brian is a dentist in DC who focuses on doing implants.  We discuss his dental journey such as dating and marrying his now wife whom he taught while she was in dental school.  We also discuss how CE has changed in the past two decades.

Nov 3, 2022

Another bonus episode this week: Clint and Russ talk about dealing with patients in general and ask the tough questions.  When refunding a denture should you break it in front of the patient?  Should we maybe give out more narcotics?  Where was Lucas in this episode?  Will Clint take over Lance's practice in a Game of Thrones-esque way?  These tough questions might be answered in this podcast.

Also if you want a bit of lagniappe, stick around at the closing for Russ and Clint discussing different practice models.

Oct 29, 2022

This week Russell interviews Dr. Robert Hubbard and returning guest Dr. Brad Keener the president and president-elect, respectively, of the Flying Dental Association.  We start out the interview with Erin's mom but end up discussing the history of the FDA, how two "competing" dentists wind up being the head of the FDA, and finish up with some HR discussions.  We also talk about their amazing upcoming continuing education courses that everyone is invited to join.  Find out more information at www.FlyingDentists.org

Oct 22, 2022

Russell Schafer talks with Dr. Nakul Rathi after SmileCon 2022.  While this was the last interview he did of the weekend, he still has two more that will be released in the next few weeks.  Nakul owns an implant company and teaches implant placement in Houston, Texas at Get Implant.  We talk about his journey from India to New York where he studied under the illustrious Dr. Tarnow and then went to The Ohio State University to study Prosthodontics.  We discuss the importance of trying to make implants affordable for all of our patients whether they live in the US or in India.

Oct 20, 2022

So we decided to make a mid week episode as Clint had some stuff he wanted to talk about.  We share some beers over Riverside.FM and discuss random topics about whatever was on our mind for the past hour.  The show

Oct 16, 2022

So Russell just got back from SmileCon 2022 in Houston.  This is actually his second interview of four that he did there, but this one required much less editting than his first one.

This week Russell talks with the co-founders of PreTeeth AI (Bill Chou and Dr. Sylvie Liu).  Preteeth AI is a software that makes a smile analysis and smile simulation software and they offer a one month free trial.  Go check out their product at www.PreTeeth.com.  It's a pretty cool piece app.

Also Dr. Alex Lin who is an ortho resident at Penn was on the podcast as well.  Dr. Lin and Dr. Liu are both dentists who trained in Taiwan and we discuss at length what being a dentist in Taiwan is like compared to dentistry in the United States.

Finally, Bill was kind enough to share a song that his band plays which is the music for the week.  To see the live performance, go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKsimznyk4w
